All Souls' Day (ABC)

A Fieles difuntos

To Our Faithful Deceased

Many Blessings to those who die in Our Lord

Yesterday, we celebrated in a festive and cheerful manner, the holy honor of the immense crowd of blessed souls - who already see God in His glory. Today, on the other hand, we feel the sorrow of those men and women "who have preceded us in the sign of our faith and now sleep the dream of peace."

Sisters and brothers:

1. We cry now because we remember the dear loved ones that we have lost. The pain, the sadness, the nostalgia - are all very human sentiments and it is good to have these feelings. We remember our loved ones and we miss their presence. We must always remember though that our heavenly reunion will be a Christian reunion, a meeting in which Our Resurrected Lord will be present - our glorious Master, the Victor of sin and of death. That is why our sorrowing humanity must open a way for faith and hope.

Today's journey is more than a day of pain, of crying and of sadness; it must be a journey of intense prayer and supplication - it must be a journey entrusted to God the Father - that He may grant "the joy of the eternal blessedness to those who believed in the resurrection of the body."

2. The Russian novelist, Leo Tolstoy, said that our future life can be seen through two windows. One window, is at an inferior level, that of mere animal life. Through this window, one only sees a terrible darkness. Yet, through the second window, a higher level, we have our spiritual life. From there one can see light and true happiness. If one can see life through this higher window of Faith, then that person will be assured that their vision of life is in the light and hope of the promised glory. None of us are destined to just disappear: for death is only an obligatory step from poverty to wealth, from mediocrity to true joy. We are destined to live eternally in God.

3. Our life is a passage towards eternity; since death is a door through which we must pass -on to another dwelling place. It is a pause between two musical notes of an unfinished symphony. It is a page that we change towards a new chapter in the book of life. It is not the end, it is a new beginning. It is not nightfall, but a new dawn.

Benjamin Franklin made a statement to a friend of his, in regards to the death of his brother: "that man is not born completely until he dies, so why then does one have to ponder the fact that a newborn child is born into the world of immortal life? We are a spirit!"

Christ has overcome death, so as a consequence, He projects an extraordinary luminosity over our extraordinary and marvelous life. Our ultimate reality is the realization of our accomplishments in a full life, in our projects, and in fulfilling our dreams; therefore, we walk towards the fullness of finding Christ face to face. Where God will be all - in all of us. May our prayers for our faithfully departed be also, a confession of our faith in eternal life. May it be - Amen.
