Dedication of the Lateran Basilica

A Dedicación S. J. de Letrán

SOMOS TEMPLOS VIVOS

Dedication of the Basilica of St. John Lateran

WE ARE ALL LIVING TEMPLES

The basilica of St. John was the first great Christian temple built in Rome after the time of persecutions, in the 4th century. It is the cathedral of the Pope as Bishop of Rome.

Brothers and sisters:

1.  The Basilica of St. John Lateran is a symbol of the unity of all Christian communities with Rome. It reminds us that we are all built upon the one foundation of Jesus Christ. Each one of us participates in the building up of the Church. Let us follow St. Augustine’s advice: “When we remember the consecration of a Church, let us think about the words of St. Paul: ‘We are all temples of the Holy Spirit.’ May we always keep our souls beautiful and pure, for God wishes us to be his holy temples. This way the Holy Spirit will be happy living in our soul.”

2.  How many important things have happened right here, where we are now gathered to celebrate the Eucharist! Many of you were probably baptized in this church, and began here your journey as a Christian. Many of you made your first communion here, and since then have been participating every Sunday at mass. Perhaps some of you were confirmed here, or maybe even married. Many of you have come here to say your last goodbye and to pray for a deceased relative or friend. Some of you come just to pray before the tabernacle. This church is a visible sign of all of this and each church reminds us that God is present in the midst of men.

3.  On the day of our baptism, we were each consecrated as a “Temple of God”. This is why every man deserves to be respected, esteemed, and valued. “If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy that person; for the temple of God, which you are, is holy.”

Each and every man and woman is sacred. We must never convert our brother into our slave or servant, into someone we cannot pardon, understand, and help. No one is a mere instrument, a means of production, or an object of pleasure for us. Each and every man and woman, whether he be a street cleaner or a movie star, a politician or an unemployed worker, young or old, a triumphant executive or a handicapped person, a woman of great beauty or ugliness, a policeman or a terrorist; whoever they may be, all men and women are “sacred”, deserving of all our love, respect, and understanding.

May today’s Eucharist make us live the foundations of our faith with even more intensity. May these foundations be renewed each time we enter this church or any other, each time we pass one by. Above all, may we bear fruit in the fulfillment of the commandments, especially the “new commandment” of charity. This is the foundation that sustains the Church that Christ founded. Amen.
