Third Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year B

FISHERS OF MEN

A preacher can be described as successful if his followers follow his advice and channel their life to God. Jesus went to Galilee to preach the kingdom of God had already arrived. To assist him, he called: Simon, Andrew, James, John, and made a surprising invitation: "Follow me and I will make you fishers of men", but most surprising was the result: "They left everything (nets, boats, work, family, hobbies, and homes), to follow him."

Sisters and brothers:

1. The one who encounters Christ cannot remain indifferent; he receives a mission. This meeting is always in silence, in solitude, in dialogue with the mystery of God. The disciples remained with Jesus until the afternoon, and didn’t even know where he lived, but then received the order to be fishers of men. The Christian cannot sit still, he must announce the arrival of the God´s Kingdom.

2. Peter, Andrew, James, and John heard the words of Jesus, they believed and left their boats, their nets, their homes. It was everything they had. But there was something in the call from the man and his promise that, without thinking twice, released their possessions and marched toward Jesus. It is possible that many Christians have received a call that could be called "sociological." We were born into a civilization, in a family and a time in which we had to be Christians. We have inherited the legacy and paternal surnames. But we lacked the challenge and fight. We lacked the specific response, awareness, a mature reflection.

3. Jesus defines the mission of his disciples as "fishers of men." This mission is to announce the Good News, and offer the joyful discovery of that He has done. One day a good Christian asked himself: "What does God want from me if I'm good?" He came to the window and saw the suffering of his brothers, the sad eyes of hungry children, and loneliness in the elderly, workers without work, hospitalized patients. And asked again: "How do I continue to be good?" In his consciousness he heard the same answer: "Listen to your brothers."

Then he decided to be with them to mourn the inconsolable, and to smile with the cheerful, to be a voice for those who cannot speak, to be vision for the blind, to be strength for those who fight for food for the hungry. That sums up his experience: "I decided to leave my comfort, I made my time their time; my day, their life, my smile their joy, my faith God’s presence."

When we follow Jesus, all the realities of this world are transformed. Hence, the Christian cries as others, but does not cry as if there was not consolation.  A Christian laughs and plays like the others, but not as if he had complete happiness. He or she negotiates and works like any other, but not as if this was their true vocation and destiny. What matters now is to be with Jesus. See what Jesus does. Listen to what Jesus said to him and engage in a personal relationship of friendship. With Jesus we have a new way of being and living. Do we already understand it? So, it's time to get down to work! The results will be surprising. Amen.
