LA MISERICORDIA DE DIOS
La fiesta de la Divina Misericordia que se celebra el segundo domingo de pascua ha quedado asociada ya al Papa de la misericordia. Juan Pablo II la instauró el año del jubileo, consagró un santuario en Polonia, escribió una encíclica, canonizó a Sor Faustina, apóstol de esta nueva devoción, y Él mismo vivió, predicó, escribió y murió movido por la misericordia divina. En el Evangelio de hoy Cristo resucitado se muestra misericordioso y comprensivo con Tomás, que experimenta en persona el perdón y la paz.
Hermanas y hermanos:
1. Este es un nuevo aniversario de la muerte de Juan Pablo II. Es justo que hoy unamos nuestro gozo por la resurrección de Cristo al recuerdo del apóstol de su misericordia. "A la humanidad, que en ocasiones parece como perdida y dominada por el poder del mal, del egoísmo y del miedo, el Señor resucitado le ofrece como don su amor que perdona, reconcilia y vuelve a abrir el espíritu a la esperanza", afirmaba en su mensaje póstumo el Papa.
2. En sus 27 años de pontificado el Papa fue apóstol de la misericordia de dos maneras: Con su enseñanza, especialmente en la encíclica "Dives in misericordia". Pero también con sus gestos que han quedado en la memoria de la Iglesia, más allá de sus palabras. ¿Cómo no recordar la visita que hizo a Alí Agcá en la cárcel para perdonarlo, después de recuperarse del atentado? La mejor representación artística de este abrazo es el cuadro de Rembrandt que visualiza la parábola del hijo pródigo. Lo vimos siempre cerca de los que necesitaban su palabra y su ayuda concreta, ofreciendo ese abrazo a los enfermos de sida, a los ancianos abandonados, a los niños, los emigrantes, los perseguidos.
3. La devoción a la Divina Misericordia constituye un auténtico movimiento espiritual promovido por santa Faustina Kowalska. A ella le pidió Jesús que se pintara una imagen suya con la leyenda "Jesús en ti confío", y que se celebrara con gran solemnidad el primer domingo después de Pascua de Resurrección. Jesús prometió: "A las almas que propaguen la devoción de mi misericordia, Yo las protegeré a lo largo de su vida como una madre cariñosa a su hijo, y a la hora de la muerte no seré para ellas Juez, sino su Salvador Misericordioso".
En 1980 escribió una de sus encíclica más bellas, que hoy podemos volver a leer. "Rico en misericordia". En ella llama a la Iglesia "casa de la misericordia" donde se acogen cuantos necesitan ayuda, perdón y amor. Las relaciones mutuas entre los hombres y los pueblos no pueden limitarse sólo a la justicia, sino que tienen que perfeccionarse en el amor. Que nuestro canto final repita la invocación del salmo: "Dad gracias al Señor porque es bueno, porque es eterna su misericordia". Que así sea.

THE MERCY OF GOD
The feast of the Divine Mercy that is celebrated the second Sunday of Easter has been already associated to the Pope of mercy. John Paul II restored the Year of the Jubilee, consecrated a sanctuary in Poland, wrote an encyclical, canonized Sister Faustina, the apostle of this new devotion, and he himself lived, preached, wrote and died moved by the divine mercy. In today's Gospel, the risen Christ is merciful and understanding with Thomas, who personally experienced Christ's forgiveness and peace.
Sisters and brothers:
1. This is another anniversary of the death of John Paul II. Today we unite our joy for the resurrection of Christ to the memory of the apostle of mercy. "To humanity, that sometimes seems lost and dominated by the power of evil, selfishness and fear, the risen Lord offers as a gift his love that forgives, reconciles, and reopens the spirit to hope," he affirmed in his posthumous message by the Pope.
2. During the Pope's 27 years of pontificate, he was an apostle of mercy in two ways: in education, especially in the encyclical "Dives in misericordia". And with his gestures that have been in the memory of the Church, beyond their words. How can we not recall his visit to Ali Agca in prison to forgive him, after recovering from the attack? The best artistic representation of this embrace is the picture by Rembrandt that visualizes the parable of the prodigal son. We saw up close those who needed his help and comfort - offering a hug to AIDS patients, to the abandoned elderly, to children, to emigrants, and the persecuted.
3. Devotion to the Divine Mercy constitutes an authentic spiritual movement promoted by St. Faustina Kowalska. She saw an image of Jesus with the inscription "Jesus I trust in you," and was celebrated with great solemnity on the first Sunday after Easter. Jesus promised: "A soul that propagates the devotion of my mercy, I will protect throughout his life as a loving mother to her child, and at the time of death, I will not be a judge to them, but the Merciful Savior".
In 1980, Pope John Paul II wrote one of his most beautiful encyclicals, which today we can read. "Rich in Mercy." It calls the Church "house of mercy" where there are many in need of help, forgiveness, and love. The relations between all people cannot be limited only in justice, but they must perfect themselves in love. Our final song can be repeated in the invocation of the Psalm: "Give thanks to the Lord for he is good, because his love is everlasting." Amen.
