LEVANTARSE DE LA MUERTE
El programa de vida de los que han decidido seguir a Cristo consiste en imitarlo en todo, también cuando cura a los enfermos y resucita a los muertos. Aquella tarde el Señor devolvió la vida a la niña y resucitó la confianza en su atribulado padre. Jairo cumplió las tres condiciones que hacían falta para ambos milagros: confiesa su fe en el poder de Dios, suplica con humildad el milagro y acepta la Voluntad de Dios. "La niña no está muerta, -dice Jesús- sino que duerme". Y dirigiéndose a ella le manda: "Talitha qumi" "Levántate."
Hermanas y hermanos:
1. Jairo cree firmemente en lo que el Salvador puede hacer, por eso no solamente le pide que cure a su hija de la enfermedad, sino que la salve de la muerte, "mi hija está en las últimas". Cuando la fe es así de grande, Jesús no se niega a usar todo su poder. Sólo necesita nuestra adhesión de fe para curarnos y resucitarnos.
2. Hay dos realidades que nos resultan incómodas: La enfermedad y la muerte. La enfermedad es la experiencia de nuestro límite, del dolor, la soledad, la impotencia. Al perder la salud física, se nos apagan también las fuerzas espirituales y la ilusión. Y cuando la muerte se acerca como algo inevitable, nos invaden los interrogantes más dramáticos. ¿Cómo reaccionamos? ¿Nos invade la desesperación, el fatalismo, la angustia? ¿O por el contrario aceptamos este encuentro con el misterio irreversible?.
3. Jesús quiso someterse a la muerte, al cansancio, al dolor y las lágrimas para redimirnos de ellos y enseñarnos a enfrentarlos con una nueva actitud. La fe no es un "seguro" automático contra la enfermedad, pero sí es una luz especial que la ilumina desde Cristo. La muerte es la realidad más tremenda e inexorable. Hoy se muere por hambre, por guerra, por accidente de tráfico, o por falta de asistencia médica. El cristiano debe luchar para evitar cualquier muerte, porque para él la lucha contra la muerte es signo de futuro, es anuncio de resurrección. La muerte no será ya el destino trágico e inevitable, sino la puerta abierta a la vida eterna.
La muerte tiene así un horizonte de esperanza. Morir es como dar un salto y caer en los brazos de Dios, en la luz de una gloria sin fin, como canta el poeta indú Rabindranath Tagore: "Cuando llegue el final de mis días, cuando la muerte llame a mi puerta, le presentaré la vendimia de mis jornadas de otoño y de mis noches de verano y todo lo que he ganado y recogido en mi laboriosa vida".
Hermanos, Dios nos ha creado para la inmortalidad. No hemos nacido para morir sino para vivir plenamente. ¿Qué podemos hacer por nuestros hermanos enfermos, o por quienes sufren la muerte de unos de sus seres queridos? No tenemos el poder de hacer milagros, pero tenemos el poder de amar, que es probablemente lo más importante. Llenemos de milagros de amor el mundo que nos rodea, sembrando la esperanza cristiana que nace de la resurrección del Señor. Así sea.

RISE FROM THE DEAD
The program of life for those who have decided to follow Christ consists in imitating him in everything, even when he cures the sick and raises the dead. That evening the Lord restored life to the little girl and resurrected confidence in the suffering father. Jairus fulfilled the three conditions that were necessary for both miracles to take place: he professes his faith in God's power, he humbly begs for the miracle and he accepts God's will. "The child is not dead," says Jesus, "she is asleep." And turning to her he commands: "Talitha qumi" "Little girl, get up."
Sisters and brothers:
1. Jairus firmly believes in what the Savior can do, and for this reason he does not only ask that Jesus cure his daughter from her illness, but also that he save her from death, "my daughter is about to die." When faith is that great, Jesus does not hesitate to use all of his power. He only needs the adherence of our faith in order to cure us and raise us up.
2. There are two realities that prove uncomfortable for us: sickness and death. Sickness is the experience of our limit, suffering, loneliness, our helplessness. When we loose our physical health, our spiritual strength and hope also turn off. And when death draws near as something inevitable, the most dramatic questions invade us. How will we react? Does desperation, anguish or fatalism invade us? Or on the contrary do we accept this encounter with the irreversible mystery?
3. Jesus chose to submit himself to death, to tiredness, to pain and tears in order to redeem us from them and to teach us to face them with a new attitude. Faith is not an automatic "insurance policy" against sickness, but it is a special light that sheds light on it from Christ. Death is the most tremendous and inexorable reality that exists. Today people die from hunger, from war, from car accidents, or due to a lack of medical assistance. The Christian should fight so as to avoid any kind of death, because for him the fight against death is a sign of future, it is to announce the Resurrection. Death will no longer be his tragic and inevitable destiny, but a door that opens to eternal life.
In this way death has a horizon of hope. Dying is like taking a jump and falling into the arms of God, into the light of everlasting glory, as the Hindu poet Rabindranath Tagore sings: "When the end of my days arrives, when death calls at my door, I will present him with the harvest of my autumn days and of my summer nights and everything that I have won and gathered in my laborious life".
Sisters and brothers, God has created us for immortality. We were not born to die but to live fully. What can we do for our sick brothers or for those who suffer the death of their loved ones? We are not able to work miracles, but we are able to love, which is probably most important. Let us fill the world around us with miracles of love, sowing the Christian hope that comes from the Lord's resurrection. Amen.
