Twenty-Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time (B)

B To 26

26th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year B

                                                                                     THE SCANDAL

Seeing how things are around us, one might say that there aren’t enough grinding stones for so many” who scandalize the young believers”.  This sin is so grave that Jesus is not afraid of being called a radical when he advises us to sacrifice a part of our bodies before hindering the access of the young into the kingdom of Heaven. For those who remain scandalized, “it would be better not to have been born”, says today’s gospel.

Brothers and Sisters,

1. News of a bloody crime horrifies us up to the point we feel a mixture of pain, hate and thirst of vengeance in our hearts. In today’s gospel, Jesus speaks of the moral assassination that is committed against the young and weak through scandal. This may occur in our own families, work environments or in our faith. Scandal confuses our conscience; it makes us deny our faith and deprives a soul from eternal salvation. Children are particularly defenseless creatures against their elders’ seductions.

2. Why such harshness in Jesus’ words? Because children are the favorite object of God’s love; and the worst punishments await those who commit injustices towards them. Scandals not only occur in people’s moral behavior (sexual abuse, dishonesty, lies, offenses) but also in unjust social relationships (labor exploitation, political corruption, squandering of useless expenses, world hunger, abuse of power). This is why James radically condemns this type of scandal.

3. Behind each teaching in the Gospel is the logic of love. It is the logic of brotherly service, contrary to the dynamics of scandal as a denial of Christianity. Scandal implies and abandonment of love, and contempt of our brethren. Therefore, the proposal of charity is not, what should be avoided? But rather, what is the best that can be done for others?

Well, in light of today’s Gospel should we end up thinking: If money makes me forget Jesuschrist, if my heart and my life don’t need God for more than a religious ornament, it would be better to burn the money and give it to the poor. It is better to be born into life naked than to be thrown into an abyss covered in gold. To wish that goodness onto others that I wish for myself, that dynamic that builds bonds of love, even if we don’t know it.

Brothers and Sisters: Christians commit many injustices due to ignorance. We have not read the Gospels or the Church’s doctrine. Let us promise today, to illustrate our faith and learn the moral criteria well. Let us read the Pope’s speeches each week. We must commit ourselves to fighting evil with good, lies with truth, hate with love. And also, let no one dare to scandalize the young in our presence: nor blasphemize against God, nor soil the purity of the soul, nor sin against brotherly love. Let us remember the grind stone.
